An RTI Activist helps citizens understand the importance of transparency, accountability and access to information held by public authorities. The role is focused on lawful awareness, responsible information-seeking and encouraging citizens to use available legal mechanisms in the public interest.

Who Can Become an RTI Activist?

Any responsible citizen with an interest in transparency, public accountability and civic awareness can work as an RTI awareness volunteer or activist, subject to applicable laws and organisational requirements.

The work should always remain factual, respectful, non-threatening and within the lawful process prescribed by the concerned authority.

What an RTI Activist Can Do

  • Conduct awareness programmes and community discussions.

  • Guide citizens towards appropriate public authorities and lawful remedies.

Responsible RTI Practice

  • Avoid harassment, threats, intimidation or misuse of information.
  • Do not present allegations as facts without reliable evidence.
  • Respect privacy, confidentiality and other lawful restrictions on disclosure.

How Citizens Can Use RTI Responsibly

Citizens should first identify the public authority that is likely to hold the required information and frame clear, specific questions. Applications and subsequent steps should follow the applicable RTI procedure and prescribed requirements.

  • Identify the relevant public authority.
  • Ask clear and specific questions related to information held by that authority.
  • Keep a copy of the application and supporting records.
  • Preserve acknowledgement, replies and other official communications.
  • Use available appeal or complaint mechanisms where legally appropriate.
